Funded in part by a grant from The Ohio State University's College of Arts and Sciences, the inaugural  episode of The Call & Response Jazz and Diversity Documentary series, Conjuring the Dove, examines the history of the Jazz Vocal Form and one of its most profound artists, Ella Fitzgerald. Tracking the systemic racism that defined the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the documentary explores the development of Jazz Vocal style as perpetuated by Minstrelsy and brutal and pervasive Jim Crow laws. Through performance, Podcast "Contrivance" and detailed historical analysis, The Velvet Sirens present an original and comprehensive perspective. The Documentary was written and produced by Jesse Chandler and Michael Kaplan.
